I’m currently expanding and reassessing the set of factors that influenced the settlement location choices for Haudenosaunee communities during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Previously, I found that overland trails were likely the most influential factor in decisions of where to build settlements. Although it was a substantial set of factors that I analyzed in that research, in order to fully understand why people live where they do, we need a complete set of the factors that they took into consideration. Thus, I’m expanding the set and reassessing how I previously measured some of the factors. I’m doing this work using ArcGIS and various datasets, including digital elevation models (DEM), NRCS soil data, NWI wetland data, settlement location data, and historic trails.
